Demon Attack
Demon Attack is a shooter game for Atari 2600, which achieved relative fame among video game players of that time. The game had the same mold, that is, it resembled other shooters of its generation, like Space Invaders, Megamania, and Galaxian.
Demon Attack was written by Rob Fulop, published by Imagic in 1982, and is supposedly based on the 1979 arcade shooter Galaxian, although it resembles various waves of the 1980 arcade game. The similarities led to a lawsuit from Atari, who bought the home video game rights; a settlement was made out of court, and Demon Attack became Imagic's best-selling game in 1983.
Demon Attack was the third game released by Imagic and was its biggest success, being one of the most popular Atari games. The player controls a small ship and must face various demons that will appear on the screen to kill them. Playable solo or with two players, the game features very good graphics and fast gameplay that makes it addictive for Atari fans. The demons the player must face vary as levels pass, changing their attack type as well as their look. When a group of enemies is destroyed, a new level begins, with even more powerful demons. In 1982 two facts marked the game's history: Atari sued Imagic for the similarity of Demon Attack with its game Phoenix, and Electronic Games Magazine awarded the game with the Video Game of the Year award.
