3-D Tic-Tac-Toe

Game Cover

3-D Tic-Tac-Toe is a game developed by Atari for the 2600 console and other 8-bit consoles of the Atari family, released in 1980.

3-D Tic-Tac-Toe is based on tic-tac-toe and is a computerized version of the board game Qubic, which consists of a 4x4x4 matrix. It took approximately six months to be developed.

To win, the player must place four of their symbols (X or O) aligned vertically, horizontally, or diagonally on the same grid, or at regular intervals across the four grids. This creates a total of 76 possible ways to win, compared to only eight possible ways in a standard 3x3 conventional tic-tac-toe game.

3-D Tic-Tac-Toe features eight variations for single-player mode, with different difficulty levels, and one for two players. In the highest difficulty mode against the computer, the CPU can take up to 20 minutes to execute a move.

In 1989, it was re-released as part of the Microsoft Entertainment Pack computer game collection, under the name TicTacTics. In this version, it can also be played with a 3x3 or 3x3x3 matrix.
