Space Shuttle: A Journey Into Space
Space Shuttle: A Journey Into Space is one of the most ambitious titles released for the Atari 2600, putting the player in complete command of a realistic space mission aboard a space shuttle. Developed by Activision and released in 1983, this space simulator required coordination, precision, and close attention to detail — unlike most simple games of the time.
In the role of mission commander, the player needs to control several flight stages: from takeoff, orbit entry, docking with a space station, and the very difficult return to Earth. The game's differential lies in its high degree of complexity, requiring the player to use practically every button and switch on the Atari console, as if they were really piloting a space vehicle.
Even with limited graphics, the simulation level of Space Shuttle was impressive for the time. It was designed more as an educational and technical experience than purely for quick entertainment, being highly valued by space exploration and flight engineering enthusiasts.
This game is a landmark for Activision for showing that the Atari 2600 could go far beyond shooter and arcade games — it could simulate a NASA mission!
