Burger Time

Game Cover

BurgerTime is an arcade game produced and developed by the Japanese industry Data East in 1982. The game was originally called Hamburger in Japan, but was renamed BurgerTime when introduced in the United States by Bally Midway. The game puts the player in the role of a chef who must assemble a burger by dropping its layers onto trays, while fleeing from walking foods in a maze. The game has been re-released several times, for Atari 2600, Commodore 64, ColecoVision, Nintendo Entertainment System, Intellivision, TI99/4A, Apple II, MS-DOS, Game Boy (version titled BurgerTime Deluxe and re-released on Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in 2011) and PlayStation.

The levels consist of various ladders and platforms, on which ingredients are found to form giant burgers (buns, meat, and lettuce). The player's goal is to make Peter Pepper walk over one of these objects to make it fall one level. Upon falling, this layer knocks down the one directly below it, until the player manages to assemble the burger on the trays located at the bottom of the screen. When all burgers are assembled, the level is complete.

While this happens, various anthropomorphic foods serve as enemies. They are: Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg. They are temporarily destroyed if the player manages to drop a burger layer on top of them. One can also use a limited amount of pepper, which serves to temporarily stun enemies. These pepper quantities can be obtained by collecting bonus foods, such as a cup of coffee, an ice cream cone, and french fries, which occasionally appear on the screen when certain burger layers are assembled.
