Enduro
Enduro is a racing game produced by Activision in 1983 for the Atari 2600 console, which became one of the company's last major successes before the video game crash of 1983.
The game features a day and night cycle, which was a novelty at the time and created a new concept for video games.
In Enduro, the player controls a vehicle similar to a Formula 1 car and must compete in the National Enduro, a long-distance endurance race whose course is random. The goal of the race is to pass a certain number of cars each day to allow the player to continue racing the next day. The player must dodge other drivers, passing 200 cars on the first day and 300 cars on subsequent days.
As the player progresses, visibility changes, and at night, the player can only see the taillights of the cars. As the days pass, the cars become more difficult to pass. The weather also influences gameplay, potentially resulting in icy or foggy patches.
Released on February 1, 1983 for the Atari 2600, Enduro was a huge success at the time. If a player managed to race for five days or more, a racing trophy appeared on the screen. If the player sent a photo of the trophy to Activision, they would receive a patch declaring them an "Activision Roadbuster".
According to the online video game database Allgame, Enduro is "the best racing game available for the Atari 2600".
