Game Cover

Berzerk is a shooter game, released in 1980 by Stern Electronics. The game places the character in a maze full of robots that fire lasers at the character. The player must destroy the robots without touching the maze walls or being hit by the laser. The player can go from one maze to another through openings in the walls. Each maze has a different pattern of robot distribution. The game has 65,536 maze rooms (256x256 grid), practically impossible to complete.

Berzerk is notable for being one of the first games to use speech synthesis. In 1980, computer voice compression was extremely expensive. The developers decided to release an English version and planned foreign versions, but they were never completed. The game was ported to the Atari 2600, reaching great popularity among player of the system. The Atari version uses the same base code, but due to hardware limitations, the voice synthesis was removed.
