H.E.R.O
H.E.R.O. is a game written by John Van Ryzin and published by Activision for the Atari 2600 in March 1984. It was ported to the Apple II, Atari 5200, Atari 8-bit Family, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, MSX, and ZX Spectrum. The player uses a helicopter backpack and other tools to rescue victims trapped deep in a mine. The mine comprises several screens using a flip-screen style.
Sega released a version of the game for its SG-1000 console in Japan in 1985. Although the gameplay was identical, Sega changed the helicopter backpack to a jetpack.
Considered one of the best games for Atari, H.E.R.O. was released in the year of the video game crash, which meant it didn't get as much attention as other Activision games. As R. Hero enters the caves, he must face various challenges such as moving obstacles and flying creatures. For this, the player has weapons such as his helmet that shoots lasers and dynamites, which are also used to knock down walls. If the player managed to accumulate 75,000 points or more, Activision would reward them with a special patch, inviting them to join the Order of H.E.R.O.s.
